Summons
a written notification to the defendant or respondent that an action has been filed against him or her.
The court's official notice to the defendant that he or she must respond to the attached complaint. The fee is $1 for an official blank summons.
The courtâs official notice to the defendant that he must respond to the attached complaint or petition.
The complaint must be served with the summons for the defendant to know the particulars of the claim against him. A sheriff or other party authorized to serve process completes a "proof of service" or "return of service" that is filed with the court.
